# PROBLEM SET 3: ADDITION, ELIMINATION and SUBSTITUTION

PROBLEM SET 3-2012

ADDITION, ELIMINATION and SUBSTITUTION

The problems on p. 78 of The Chemical Basis of Metabolism 2nd Edition are taken from classical organic chemistry and from biochemistry. If you can solve these problems, you are ready to go on. One important suggestion: When you write mechanisms, do not skip steps; if you do you are likely to make a mistake. Furthermore, do not try to figure out the answer in your head. Use the principles developed in the first three chapters to analyze the possibilities. Then, write mechanisms for the different possibilities to predict the products. Do not use any textbook or other source of help. Do the entire problem set. Then check your work against the answers given on p. 82.
